Evo-rail – Rail Live: Sustainability

It is a well-known fact that transport is one of the most carbon intensive industries globally. Road transport in particular represents a large proportion of this, in addition to being a major source of urban air and noise pollution. A global shift from dependency on cars towards a less carbon intensive mode of transport, such as rail, is essential.

The only way to achieve such a modal shift is to ensure that rail is the most attractive form of travel for the passenger – so that they feel empowered to make that choice. That is why evo-rail, a rail telecoms company formed out of FirstGroup, has developed ‘rail-5G’ a mmWave technology which can meet the ever-growing demand by rail customers for high-speed connectivity by being able to provide over 1Gbps constant connectivity to trains. On-board, reliable, and superfast Wi-Fi has a role to play in making rail the preferred mode of transport.

Not only does rail-5G play a key part in enabling a modal shift, but evo-rail uses self-powered poles to provide the 1Gbps connectivity to trains, with zero carbon emissions. The technology integrates efficient solar cells with a battery in a single, lean pole that is operated by a unique power management system. The power requirements for the units are significantly lower than required for radio unit used in a mobile network which allows them to be powered solely by renewable energy sources and therefore means the technology is carbon neutral.

Evo-rail’s rail-5G access points are sustainable, reliable and built to last, making them the perfect solution for trackside networks.
